University Clinic for Ophthalmology
The University Clinic for Ophthalmology at Pius-Hospital Oldenburg is one of the largest eye clinics in northern Germany. For almost 30 years, all eye diseases have been treated here - in around 3.000 inpatient cases and a further 10.000 outpatients. The clinic offers the entire spectrum of modern ophthalmology.
Corneal transplants are a particular speciality. Treatment with artificial corneas (keratoprostheses) is also carried out. Another area of specialisation is the conservative surgical treatment of retinal diseases. This includes modern minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery for the treatment of retinal detachment, macular diseases and retinal changes caused by diabetes, the treatment of wet age-related and other forms of macular degeneration in particular, as well as other inflammatory, infectious retinal vitreous diseases.
The University Clinic for Ophthalmology utilises modern laser procedures and vitreous drug injections.
Teaching
Teaching at the University clinic of Ophthalmology covers the entire spectrum of ophthalmology. Teaching can be found in year 2 in module 2.4 ("Perception") and in year 4 (module "Propaedeutics Neurology/Psychiatry") - more information can also be found on the homepage for the model degree programme in Human Medicine.
In addition to the curricular teaching, which includes interactive seminars, lectures and practical courses, the University Hospital offers a microsurgery course as an elective subject, which includes the practical performance of various ophthalmological surgical methods on the pig's eye. In addition, a laboratory course is offered to give students their first insights into research at the Eye Clinic, in which students actively and independently carry out their first laboratory methods for tissue engineering (tissue cultivation). For more information, please refer to the course catalogue:
