University clinic of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pain Management

The University Clinic for Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pain Therapy (AINS) at Oldenburg Hospital covers the entire spectrum of the four pillars of our specialty.
In anesthesiology, the medical team performs approximately 20,000 anesthetics and regional anesthesia procedures per year in more than 20 operating rooms and procedure suites operating simultaneously. The treatment spectrum includes neonatal and pediatric anesthesia, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, and circulatory optimization during major surgical procedures. Particular areas of focus are advanced hemodynamic monitoring and modern, thrombelastometry-based bleeding management. The AINS Clinic also operates its own clinical study center to conduct AMG and MPDG studies at an international level. Another focus of our clinic is cardiac anesthesia, where we implement fast-track concepts and regional anesthesia to provide optimal care for these critically ill patients.
Two intensive care units and IMC units
In two intensive care units and IMC units, our team cares for 4,000 critically ill patients annually, including those following major surgery, serious injuries, and acute illnesses involving impaired cardiovascular and pulmonary function. All common support systems are used, such as veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), left ventricular assist devices (LVAD, Impella). Furthermore, all forms of advanced hemodynamic monitoring and renal replacement therapy are available. A particular clinical and scientific focus is digital documentation, which enables us to analyze large amounts of data and identify predictors of severe disease progression.
Emergency medicine
In the emergency medicine department, colleagues with specialized emergency medical training work as emergency physicians on three emergency medical vehicles, an intensive care transport vehicle, and offshore rescue helicopters in the North and Baltic Seas. Our clinic offers specialized training and qualification courses and operates its own simulation center to ideally prepare the team for emergency situations.
Telemedicine Center
The hospital's telemedicine center is staffed around the clock by our physicians and ensures medical care for patients who have no access to traditional medical care. This particularly applies to emergency medical care at offshore wind farms. Specially trained emergency paramedics are on-site and, after consultation with the telemedicine center, provide emergency care. The telemedicine connection thus ensures that all patients receive ideal care and that evidence-based decisions can be made, for example, regarding evacuation flights. Other areas of application of the telemedicine center include supporting community emergency paramedics and statutory health insurance emergency service districts, as well as providing long-term care and weaning for patients requiring home ventilation and outpatient intensive care.
Treatment of acute and chronic pain
In addition, the University Clinic of Anesthesiology (AINS) has a pain clinic specifically dedicated to the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Patients who require special treatment options due to the severity and duration of their pain are treated here and are therefore cared for by a specialized team of physicians, psychologists, and nurses.
