Recognition of Examinations

You can submit an application for recognition if you

  • have come to the University of Oldenburg from another place of study;
  • have switched between programmes at the University of Oldenburg (e.g. your combination of subjects);
  • have completed components abroad.

Regarding professionally or vocationally acquired skills, please submit an application for recognition to the PLAR-Service.

Please note that recognition can only take place after you have enrolled at the University of Oldenburg.

Overview of the Recognition procedure

Step 1: Preparation

We recommend that you make use of the following counselling services to prepare your application, especially if you are changing universities or going abroad:

1. Counselling by the Recognition Team of the Academic Examination Office:

  • Information on the application process and clarification of open questions
  • Explanation of the formal requirements
  • Non-binding assessment of recognition options
  • Support with the application process and module allocation

2. Counselling by the subject representatives:

You can seek advice in advance from the subject representatives about the possibility of recognition in terms of content. We recommend using the counselling form for documentation purposes.

If the application is well-prepared, the processing time can be shortened.

Step 1 of 6

Step 2: Filling the Application forms

After the counselling session, it's time to submit your application. To do this, fill out the appropriate form for your subject or degree programme. Depending on your degree objective, different attachments must be included.
Bachelor:

  • Application for recognition,
  • Attachment for the subject / degree programme or for the professionalisation area.

Master's: Application for recognition (already includes the annex)

Instructions on how to fill in the forms (in German) can be found here: How to – Antragstellung

Submit your signed application together with the relevant verified evidence (grade transcript, certificate, transcript of records, counselling form or documentation, learning agreement, etc.) via your university email address to [email protected]

If module descriptions are available, please provide a link to the source or attach them as an extra file.

Step 2 of 6

Step 3: Waiting period

You will receive a confirmation that we received your application from us, in which we will inform you of the time required until processing. The waiting time depends on the current volume of applications. We process all applications in chronological order of receipt.

You can also find the current waiting time on this website.

Please refrain from sending status enquiries by e-mail during this period. If you have any queries, please contact us in person or by telephone.

Step 3 of 6

Step 4: Formal Examination

As soon as it is your application's turn, it will be processed by the Recognition team. The following will be checked:

  • The completeness of the documents,
  • fulfilment of the legal framework conditions
  • the formal criteria (e.g. credit points, level, etc.)
  • the conversion of grades and, if applicable, credit points,
  • if necessary, the adjustment of your application.

If any documents are missing or if we have any questions or queries, we will contact you by e-mail. We may ask you to come to our consultation hours.

After successful processing, we will send your application with all documents to the relevant subject representatives for a decision.

As soon as your application has been received by the subject representation, you will receive a note in your grade view in Stud.IP: Recognition application is with the examination board.

Step 4 of 6

Step 5: Review by the subject representative

The subject representation examines the application and all documents, with a particular focus on the assessment of the content of the submitted achievements. In addition to the workload (credit points), the learning outcomes and the skills acquired as a result, the level of study (e.g. Bachelor's or Master's), the profile of the study programme and the quality of the original institution are also taken into account in the assessment.

Should there be any queries at this point or required further documents and information, you will receive an email from us.

The departmental representatives will then decide your application and inform the Recognition Team of the outcome.

Step 5 of 6

Step 6: Notification of the Results

The subject representatives will send the decision on your application for recognition to the Recognition Team. We will then implement this decision.

If the decision is favourable ...

  • ... we will enter the recognition in your grade account, which can be viewed via StudIP.
  • ... we will mark the recognition to make it comprehensible for third parties (S = study achievement, A = study abroad, Ü = transfer from another UOL degree programme).
  • ... you will then receive an e-mail from us informing you that your case has been finalised.

If the decision is negative ...

  • ... we will record the requested module as rejected. This can be recognised in the grade overview in StudIP: the module is crossed out and the column ‘KP’ reads ‘Credit application rejected’.
  • ... you will receive an e-mail from us informing you of the result.
  • ... you will also receive a letter of rejection by post stating the reasons for the rejection.
