Epidemiology and Biometry

Welcome to the webpage of the Division of Epidemiology and Biometry (EuB) within the Faculty of Medicine.

News

  • At the end of June, we hosted representatives from the fields of epidemiology, biometrics and medical informatics at the German medical faculties at the Schlaues Haus in Oldenburg. It was a great pleasure - thank you very much for all the contributions and discussions. This marks the end of my time as spokesperson for the specialist representatives group. My successor is Prof Hinske (Augsburg).
  • We are still looking for an experienced person with a particular research interest and standing in epidemiology or biometrics to join our team. We would have liked to hire them as a postdoc, also in order to minimise the infrastructural burden in favour of research freedom. However, the formal conditions for this are considerable (doctorate, but not too long ago), and the statements on the eligibility for a permanent position are obviously not sufficiently convincing. We may therefore have to advertise for a Head of Research instead. If you are interested, please contact the head of department in advance.
  • The ISS project is continuing - Ms Neuser has returned from parental leave and is now primarily concerned with the patient perspective. Surveys are no longer necessary. Many thanks to all participants (doctors and patients) for their contributions!
  • We are also continuing to work on Q1 teaching topics. Contact persons are Mr Walsemann for projects on Oldenburg and Antje Timmer for the survey of specialist representatives.
  • The MIDDEL project (singing and music therapy in care homes) has been completed - many thanks to all participants! Manuscripts have been submitted and the results will be available soon.
  • Our review projects have also all been completed - after pandemic- and staff-related delays and an extremely long peer review phase, we published three Cochrane Reviews in 2025. Manuscripts on the competency network analysis are currently in peer review.

Team

  • We will soon have a complete team again.
  • Mr Gera is increasingly responsible for biometric advice on clinical trials / in the KKS. Occasional requests can already be dealt with now. Please use the BAMBIE portal for enquiries from this area for the time being.
  • From 1 September 2025, we will be joined by Mr Waldmann, who will then be primarily responsible for advising early career researchers. Please be patient until then and during the familiarisation period - there may still be a shortage of advisors.
  • In addition, Mr de Sordi, our data manager, has been given a small increase to support Mr Waldmann in advising.
  • Mr Otto has left the department after successfully completing his habilitation and is no longer available for enquiries. Many thanks for his great commitment to our department over the last 10 years and all the best for his future career!
  • PhD epidemiologists or biometricians with a strong interest in research are also welcome to send us an unsolicited application.

Student enquiries

  • Students of medicine, epidemiology, public health, biometrics and mathematics are welcome to apply for internships or student assistant work. However, we are currently only able to supervise / employ people with a good command of German and English.
  • On the other hand, we ask biomedical students not to submit any requests for internships or theses unless they have a solid grounding in statistical programming, medicine and epidemiology/biometrics.

Clinical Epidemiology: A Daydream?

"To the pure clinician, the clinical research published in general medical journals is no longer really understandable, because the design and the analyses have become too complicated. To the pure methodologist, it may not be evident how particular findings fit with background clinical and basic science knowledge. .....If we want to preserve and reinforce proper judgements about the theory and practice of medicine—including the use of ‘big data’ and the use of ‘personalised medicine’—we need people with both types of knowledge in one head"

Vandenbroucke 2017

"Zwei Dinge sind zu unserer Arbeit nötig: Unermüdliche Ausdauer und die Bereitschaft, etwas, in das man viel Zeit und Arbeit gesteckt hat, wieder wegzuwerfen"

Albert Einstein.
