I am currently researching a new form of non-invasive deep brain stimulation for the treatment of motor and psychological symptoms in Parkinson's patients. We are investigating both the simulation of the treatment in order to achieve optimal results and the clinical application of the method. The project is being carried out in international cooperation with the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Groningen under the direction of Prof. Dr. A. Aleman and the Department of General Psychology headed by Prof. Dr. C. S. Herrmann. Both basic scientific and clinical questions are addressed.

Other research interests include memory deficits in MS patients and stroke victims as well as quantitative MRI methods.

Clinically, I work in the outpatient clinic for movement disorders at the University Clinic for Neurology in Oldenburg and I am currently undergoing further training to become a specialist in neurology.

I am also involved in the Young Neurologists' Research Group of the German Neurological Society to promote scientific exchange between young colleagues and help shape future research perspectives.

Research

My research focuses on non-invasive methods of neurostimulation, with a particular focus on electrical stimulation. In particular, I am investigating its influence on motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's patients. For precise planning, we use simulation-based models that can be used to calculate the effects of stimulation and predict effects. In addition to clinical studies, we also focus on the physiological effects and the underlying mechanisms of stimulation in the healthy brain.

Another focus is the memory disorder “accelerated long-term forgetting”. This area of deficit, which is relevant to everyday life, is difficult to objectify in routine tests. We are therefore investigating the phenomenon in various disease models in order to better understand its occurrence and causes.

Methodologically, I work with cerebral imaging, non-invasive electrical neurostimulation and neuropsychological testing procedures. Together, these techniques enable a comprehensive analysis of neuronal processes and clinical effects.

An additional research focus is on the effects of obesity on neuronal plasticity. We investigate these relationships using functional imaging, among other things, in order to visualize adaptive and maladaptive changes in the brain.
