BMFTR-Project SISOPS

Project goals

In SISOPS, an innovative, interactive display and control panel for surgical staff is to be prototypically implemented and researched. The system is designed to enable surgeons to directly and sterilely control various devices in the operating theatre and to display information relevant to the operation in the immediate vicinity of the surgial site. The previously unused surface of the drapes used to cover the patient during an operation will be utilised as a projection surface. By continuously recording the geometry of the drapes, this surface can be used to project distortion-free graphic user interfaces, visualisations of surgery-relevant data, the WHO safety checklist or even video links to surgical colleagues. This would make it possible for surgeons to directly and intuitively control operating theatre-relevant systems using touchless gestures, access information or consult with colleagues without the need for complex augmented reality technology or monitors outside the field of vision. Ultimately, this allows the surgeon to focus more on the operating theatre site. The system should therefore reduce operating theatre times and increase patient safety. The investigations in this project will focus on suitable operating concepts, rapid capture of the projection surface, networking in the operating theatre and methods for distortion-free display.
