University Clinic for Orthopaedics

The University Clinic for Orthopaedics is one of the largest departments at Pius Hospital Oldenburg. Diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system have been treated here for over 60 years. Around 2,000 patients are admitted as inpatients every year, including more than 150 children and adolescents.

The clinic specialises in the following: Prostheses for hips, knees, shoulders and ankles, joint surgery, corrective surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, sports orthopaedics, surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders and tumour orthopaedics. It also has special expertise in the field of minimally invasive joint surgery and arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, hip and ankle joints.

There is also the Endoprosthetics Centre at Pius-Hospital Oldenburg (endoprosthetics: implantation of artificial joints).

It is one of three centres in Lower Saxony offering maximum care (EPZmax), certified by the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC).

Teaching

The devision´s teaching activities cover the entire spectrum of orthopaedics.

The content is presented in a wide variety of teaching formats and includes the following topics, among others:

  • Degenerative and acquired diseases of the musculoskeletal system
  • Orthopaedic examination of the large joints and the spine
  • Paediatric orthopaedics
  • Orthopaedic rehabilitation
  • Orthopaedic trauma care
  • Fundamentals of biomechanics

The lecturers teach on the model degree programme in Human Medicine and on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in PTM (Physics, Technology and Medicine).

The main areas of research at the University Clinic of Orthopaedics include
