University Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery
The University Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery at Oldenburg Hospital covers the entire surgical spectrum of the speciality with the exception of transplant surgery. The clinic team performs almost 3.000 inpatient and outpatient operations per year.
The focus is on tumour surgery, especially the treatment of malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, colon, rectum, oesophagus and stomach. Other areas of treatment include inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease, the treatment of proctological conditions and surgery for hernias such as inguinal or incisional hernias. Where possible, operations are performed using minimally invasive endoscopic or laparoscopic techniques ("keyhole technique").
Teaching
As with the entire curriculum, teaching in the subject of surgery is organised according to the principle of topic- and organ-related block teaching. The individual surgical subjects teach their subject matter together with other cross-sectional areas and related subjects, summarised over time. In this way, clinical pictures are taught in a coherent manner and from the complementary perspective of the various specialist disciplines. In addition to tried and tested forms of teaching such as lectures, seminars and bedside teaching, theoretical knowledge is also deepened using modern forms of teaching such as internships, for example suturing courses, small group teaching with drama patients (SP) and problem-based learning (POL). In addition, our employees participate as mentors in the area of professional medical development in the form of an interactive seminar. Success is assessed by means of multiple-choice tests in which the level of theoretical knowledge is determined. In clinical-practical examinations, such as the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), students' skills and abilities are assessed in a standardised manner.
The University Department of General and Visceral Medicine teaches in the following modules/training sections of the Oldenburg curriculum, among others:
- from year 1: POL lessons
- Year 2 and 3: lectures; problem-solving seminars
- Year 4: Seminars and internships at the clinical training centre
- Year 5: Supervision of the clinical-pathological, case conference, surgery revision course
- Practical year: Professional development; PJ teaching at the OldenburgClinical Centre
In addition, the University Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery is involved in the teaching of various training professions and specialised further training courses.
Research & Publications
Alongside medical care and student teaching, research is one of the three pillars of university medicine.
We are currently establishing individual working groups at our clinic.
Our research focus is on both clinical and basic research. In the future, we will have the opportunity to actively participate in translational research in co-operation with the University of Groningen. Our aim is to consistently develop and improve current therapeutic strategies. We are in the process of setting up a joint laboratory under Dutch and German management. The individual research projects are diverse and will be presented in detail by the respective working groups in the future. Further information on individual research projects:
