@misc{Castro.2024, abstract = {This paper presents the results of a survey conducted by the working group on research software metadata within the NFDI (Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur / National Research Data Infrastructure) to gain a better understanding of the requirements and practices for research software metadata in the different NFDI consortia. The survey consisted of four main parts: usage of research software, FAIRness of research software, state of metadata on research software, and artifacts developed to support FAIRness. The survey was distributed to representatives of the 26 NFDI consortia, with responses from 21 of them. The survey showed that research software is primarily used for data processing, simulation, and software prototyping. Analysis scripts, libraries, stand-alone software, and web services are the most common software types. Some consortia reported that research software could be considered a research output, while others only viewed it as a supplement to traditional publications. Proper citation of software is crucial for ensuring FAIRness. Approximately half of the domains represented by the surveyed NFDI consortia already use DOIs for citing software. Some domains had not yet fully adopted practices for documenting research software, posing challenges for both developers and users. Researchers typically search for software using generic search engines, academic papers, and community-specific marketplaces where they exist. In respect to metadata, only a few domain-specific metadata schemas for research software were identified by the consortia, with generic metadata schemas such as Codemeta, Bioschemas, schema.org, and the Citation File Format being the most commonly mentioned. Relevant metadata elements for research software include algorithms, methods, software/hardware requirements, and tasks performed by the software. The survey results will guide activities in the NFDI working group on research software metadata and will also be a relevant foundation for the base service nfdi.software.},

@misc{Eberl.2024, abstract = {The non-profit association National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) promotes science and research through a National Research Data Infrastructure. Its aim is to develop and establish an overarching research data management (RDM) for Germany and to increase the efficiency of the entire German science system. After a two-and-a-half year build up phase, the process of adding new consortia, each representing a different data domain, has ended in March 2023. NFDI now has 26 disciplinary consortia (and one additional basic service collaboration). Now the full extent of cross-consortial interaction is beginning to show. The attached table of jointly documented cross-consortial collaborations is based on a White Paper ratified by the NFDI association's consortia assembly in January 2023. It defines collaborations as ``the exchange of information on or development of common approaches to managing the research data of at least one domain.'' From the perspective of the consortia assembly, ``A necessary condition for any collaboration is that activities are on behalf and in line with the strategic aims of a consortium and are not activities by individuals within them only.'' As the consortia were established in three separate rounds with roughly a year in between, some consortia have had more opportunities to participate in the NFDI association than others which shows in their higher levels of interaction. We expect these differences to diminish over time with further updates of this dataset. The tabular overview of the collaborations was created as a collaborative work in which all consortia had the opportunity to enter joint activities. Nevertheless, this document does not claim to be complete. Instead, it should be understood as a first version; future collaboration will be added and the document will be published in updated versions.},

Therefore, it is covered by multiple NFDI consortia. To fulfill the FAIR criteria for research software, it needs to be described with meaningful and interoperable metadata enhancing transparency, reproducibility, and reusability in research. While there exist some metadata schemes for research software, e.g., CodeMeta, they have some limitations, e.g., missing elements and missing semantic interoperability. To address these issues, this working group aims to provide a comprehensive metadata vocabulary for research software, compatible with existing frameworks such as schema.org and CodeMeta. Also, the working group will support all NFDI consortia in applying the vocabulary as well as develop domain-specific extensions if needed. German Summary Forschungssoftware wird in vielen Bereichen der Wissenschaft zur Forschung genutzt und stellt teilweise selbst ein Forschungsobjekt dar. Viele NFDI-Konsortien decken Forschungssoftware als wichtiges Forschungsartefakt mit ab und wollen, dass Forschungssoftware in Zukunft die FAIR-Kriterien erf{\"u}llt, um die Transparenz, Reproduzierbarkeit und Wiederverwendbarkeit in software-basierter Forschung zu erh{\"o}hen. Damit Forschungssoftware die FAIR-Kriterien erf{\"u}llt, muss sie mit aussagekr{\"a}ftigen und interoperablen Metadaten beschrieben werden. Daf{\"u}r werden entsprechende Metadatenschemata ben{\"o}tigt. Es gibt zwar einige Metadatenschemata f{\"u}r Forschungssoftware, z. B. CodeMeta, aber sie weisen einige Einschr{\"a}nkungen auf, z. B. fehlende Elemente und fehlende semantische Interoperabilit{\"a}t. Um diese Probleme zu beheben, hat sich diese Arbeitsgruppe zum Ziel gesetzt, ein umfassendes Metadatenvokabular f{\"u}r Forschungssoftware bereitzustellen, das mit bestehenden Standards wie schema.org und CodeMeta kompatibel ist. Funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, one of the major goals of the ZLE is to make energy research activities and its resources available for public use while preserving the intellectual property of all involved parties. This will strengthen the research in Lower Saxony by promotion and expansion of cooperation between science and industry on strategic sectors. Moreover, greater transparency in the use of public funds and in the development of research activities is enabled.},

New interconnections between different energy sectors, such as power, heat and mobility, increase the system's complexity. In this context, the digitalisation towards cyber-physical energy systems (CPES) alleviates change, and equally affects technical, social, and societal topics, as well as the mode of research in the CPES research community. Research efforts towards CPES heavily rely on modelling and (co-)simulation-based approaches. Tracking of models together with all data creates a complex software and data management challenge, which needs to be addressed in each research project. To this end, nfdi4energy covers the whole research and transfer cycle of projects in energy system research ranging from (1) identifying relevant competences for a project; (2) defining relevant scenarios and experimental setup; (3) integrating models and data; coupling tools and laboratories; (4) extracting results, facilitating public consultation; to (5) identifying research challenges for follow-up activities. We define the following key objectives: (1) Establish common research community services for FAIR data, models, and processes in energy system research and motivate its use in the community. (2) Allow traceability, reproducibility, and transparency of results for the scientific community as well as for the society, improving the overall FAIRness. (3) Enable and motivate the involvement of society for the identification and solution of relevant research questions. (4) Promote better collaboration and knowledge transfer between scientific research institutes and business partners via FAIR research data management. (5)~Simplify identification, integration, and coordination of simulation-based models. (6) Integrate the provided services for energy system research within the wider NFDI ecosystem to improve cross-domain collaboration. To fulfil these objectives, nfdi4energy concentrates on five key services to provide a non-discriminatory access to digital research objects: (1) Competence to help to navigate the interdisciplinary research field, (2) Best Practices to get information about successful conduct of research including research data management, (3) Registry to find suitable data and software, (4) Simulation to couple existing simulations and, therefore, reuse software artefacts, and (5) Transparency to involve more stakeholders in all research stages. With these services, nfdi4energy aims to develop and provide an open and FAIR research ecosystem in the energy system domain containing a large share of common workflows from data gathering to the inclusion into research software, together with data publications for researchers spanning from single component development (like battery storage systems or other new smart grid equipment) up to system-of-systems research (based on mathematical or analytical models).},

We start with a look at what research software is, before we discuss the purpose of research software categories. We propose a multi-dimensional categorization of research software. We present a template for characterizing such categories. As selected dimensions, we present our proposed role-based, readiness-based, developer-based, and dissemination-based categories. Since our work has been inspired by various previous efforts to categorize research software, we discuss them as related works. We characterize all these categories via the previously introduced template, to enable a systematic comparison. We report on the multi-dimensional categorization of selected research software examples.},

Some of these heuristics are distributed on an algorithmic level. This means that the way information is exchanged between the distributed units can effect the efficiency of the algorithm, in terms of computational effort, message volume, and convergence speed. It may even impact the effectiveness, i.e. the solution quality. The performance of control systems is of utmost importance for stable and optimal operation of critical infrastructure in smart grids. Therefore, factors influencing the effectiveness and efficiency, like the communication topology, must be thoroughly investigated in order to both initially configure them optimally and react appropriately to undesired behavior at runtime. The impact of the communication topology is studied with an experimental setup, using COHDA as an example heuristic. In this paper, we discuss how the potential of a fleet of battery-electric transportation vehicles can be used to provide frequency containment reserve. To this end, we first examine the use case in detail and then present the system designed to meet this challenge. We give an overview of the tasks and individual sub-components, consisting of (a) an artificial neural network to predict the availability of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) day-ahead, (b) a heuristic approach to compute marketable flexibility, (c) a simulation to check the plausibility of flexibility schedules, (d) a multi-agent system to continuously monitor and control the AGVs and (e) the integration of fleet flexibility into a virtual power plant. @article{Oest.2021, abstract = {With the transition towards renewable energy resources, the impact of small distributed generators (DGs) increases, leading to the need to actively stabilize distribution grids. DGs may be organized in virtual power plants (VPPs), where DGs' schedules must be coordinated to enable the VPP to act as a single plant. One approach to solving this problem is using multi-agent systems (MAS) to offer autonomous, robust, and flexible control methods. The coordination of such systems requires communication between agents. The time required for this depends on communication characteristics, determined by the underlying communication infrastructure. In this paper, we investigate communication influences for the wireless technologies CDMA450 and LTE Advanced on the fully distributed optimization heuristic COHDA, which is used to perform optimized scheduling for a VPP. The use case under consideration is the adaptation of schedules to provide flexibility for regional congestion management for delivery on a regionalized ancillary service market (rAS). We investigate the scalability of the VPP and the effects of disturbances in the communication infrastructure. The results show that the optimization duration of COHDA can be influenced by the underlying communication infrastructure and that this optimization method is applicable to a limited extent for product delivery of rASs.},

@article{Tiemann.2020, abstract = {While grid fees have a major impact on energy costs of large consumers, they can be reduced via peak shaving using electrical energy storages, like lithium ion, lead acid, or redox flow batteries. Especially in Germany, there are further options, namely making use of intensive and atypical grid usage, to reduce the regular grid fee. In the present analysis, we examined load profiles of more than 5,300 company sites and checked under which circumstances electrical energy storage can be profitably applied to reduce the grid fee in the three mentioned ways. Here, the calculation of each company specific grid fee was performed compliant to the German regulatory scheme with fixed power- and energy-dependent prices as well as considering the actual prices charged by the connected grid operators. The analysis showed, that the power price for grid usage as well as the investment costs for energy storages are most important for the profitability of general peak shaving, while the concrete shape of the load profile determines the capacity with the shortest payback period. The intensive grid usage is the most promising revenue model, if the formal requirements are met. The atypical grid usage is the second most profitable approach. In most cases, lithium ion storages were most cost-effective, compared to lead acid and redox flow batteries. A future reduction of storage investment costs will lead to an increase of profitable projects especially concerning the individual grid fees. For the general grid fee, a massive price reduction of more than 50 {\%} is necessary to achieve payback periods of less than five years for a noteworthy number of company sites.},

While this change enables new research, it also increases the amount of, and need for, available data and models. Therefore, a platform for open digital energy research and development is required to support researchers and practitioners with their new needs and to enable FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) research data management in energy research. We present a functional and technological concept for such a platform based on six elements: Competence to enable researchers and practitioners to find suitable partners for their projects, Methods to give an overview on the diverse possible research methods within energy research, Repository to support finding data and models for simulation of energy systems, Simulation to couple these models and data to create user-defined simulation scenarios, Transparency to publish results and other content relevant for the different stakeholder in energy research, and Core to interconnect all elements and to offer a unified entry point. We discuss the envisioned use of the outlined platform with use cases addressing three relevant stakeholder groups.},

To enhance its efficiency, metadata are crucial for better findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) of research software. The current approaches to metadata for ERS have multiple limitations, e.g., they are not based on a systematic approach to include the diverse requirements of energy researchers. To address this issue, a qualitative study was conducted to gather specific requirements for metadata for ERS. The findings show the need for additional metadata elements for research software, e.g., on the community or the support options. Also, domain-specific metadata are required, e.g., on time and geographical scope of an ERS. Subsequently, a domain model was developed based on the requirements that lays the foundation for creating a metadata scheme for ERS.},

The application of software enables researchers to reproduce, validate, and expand upon study findings. The analysis of open-source code aids in the comprehension, comparison, and integration of approaches. Often, however, no further use occurs because relevant software cannot be found or is incompatible with existing research processes. This results in repetitive software development, which impedes the advancement of individual researchers and entire research communities. In this article, the DataDesc (Data Description) framework is presented---an approach to describing data models of software interfaces with machine-actionable metadata. In addition to a specialized metadata schema, an exchange format and support tools for easy collection and the automated publishing of software documentation are introduced. This approach practically increases the FAIRness, i.e., findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability, of research software as well as effectively promotes its impact on research.},

In order to achieve this, it is important to identify the most appropriate ontology for the description of research data and software. However, despite the importance of this task, it still presents a significant challenge. While there are some comparisons of ontologies, a gap exists in assessing their usefulness according to ontology metadata. This paper fills this gap by defining 21 criteria sorted into four categories to help researchers choose ontologies in the energy domain. The criteria are used to compare eight ontologies for energy research to showcase their use and analyze the ontologies. The analysis reveals the Open Energy Ontology (OEO) as the top-ranked ontology. This underscores the importance of metadata comparison in ontology selection and highlights the benefits of incorporating metadata criteria into ontology terminology services to support researchers.},

These endeavors are enabled by continuously improving tools and methods for developing, maintaining and sharing models and data. Knowledge of how to better conduct, share and archive one's research has become increasingly complex and hard to manage for individual researchers or single research groups. Identifying and including relevant scientists from energy research, social sciences, and further disciplines is sometimes difficult. Furthermore, a plethora of best practices and guidelines exist on how to prepare data, models and results in ways that make them easier to discover, verify and build upon. To present a sustainable, problem-solving, technical solution for the energy research community, NFDI4Energy develops in Task Area 1 (TA1) two services of the NFDI4Energy platform. Consequentially, the intention of this abstract within the disciplinary track ``Engineering'' is to provide an overview of the development process with a special focus on Competence and Best Practices. In addition, it discusses interconnections with other Task Areas as well as the chances and challenges that are associated with those connections. The academic audience, e.g., from the Information Systems and (Software) Engineering domain at CoRDI 2023, can observe and discuss our proposed procedure with other community members. Furthermore, we expect interested individuals to compare the proposed procedures with their own, which can lead to meaningful discussions and knowledge-sharing situations within the Engineering domain.},

These endeavors are enabled by continuously improving tools and methods for developing, maintaining and sharing models and data. Knowledge of how to better conduct, share and archive one's research has become increasingly complex and hard to manage for individual researchers or single research groups. Identifying and including relevant scientists from energy research, social sciences, and further disciplines is sometimes difficult. Furthermore, a plethora of best practices and guidelines exist on how to prepare data, models and results in ways that make them easier to discover, verify and build upon. To present a sustainable, problem-solving, technical solution for the energy research community, NFDI4Energy develops in Task Area 1 (TA1) two services of the NFDI4Energy platform. Consequentially, the intention of this abstract within the disciplinary track ``Engineering'' is to provide an overview of the development process with a special focus on Competence and Best Practices. In addition, it discusses interconnections with other Task Areas as well as the chances and challenges that are associated with those connections. The academic audience, e.g., from the Information Systems and (Software) Engineering domain at CoRDI 2023, can observe and discuss our proposed procedure with other community members. Furthermore, we expect interested individuals to compare the proposed procedures with their own, which can lead to meaningful discussions and knowledge-sharing situations within the Engineering domain.},

The SGAE process model is motivated by the main objective of contributing application-oriented research results for distributed control concepts on a sound methodological background. With this process model, we strive for an engineering aspiration within the domain of Smart Grids. The process model is set up with an initial conceptualisation phase followed by an iterable cycle of five phases with both analytical and experimental parts, giving detailed information on inputs and results for each phase and identifying the needed actors for each phase. Simulation of large-scale Smart Grid scenarios is a core component of SGAE. We therefore elaborate on tooling and techniques needed in that context and illustrate the whole process model using an application example from a finished research and development project.},

@phdthesis{Niee.2015b, abstract = {Distributed coordination approaches are often examined for applicability within control systems when either the control task gets much more complex or new functionality is required that cannot be implemented as an extension of the existing system. The ongoing decarbonization of the electrical energy system leads to such a need of new functionality: The flexibility of the huge amount of distributed energy units and loads can only be accessed for services in the power system using new IT-based concepts. Dynamic Virtual Power Plants (DVPP) aggregate the flexibility of these units and address current energy markets. As an extension of the Virtual Power Plant concept they show much more dynamics in both aggregation of energy units and energy unit operation. For these tasks, distributed algorithms and self-organizing concepts are applied within DVPP. Whereas operation schedules are set up for all energy units within DVPP in a day-ahead planning procedure, incidents may render these schedules infeasible during execution, like deviation from prognoses, outages or ancillary service provision. As these incidents are typical for the addressed type of energy units, a continuous energy scheduling process is needed to ensure product fulfillment. In the work at hand, DynaSCOPE is presented as an approach for the task of continuous energy scheduling within DVPP. To develop DynaSCOPE, the schedul- ing task is considered as a distributed constraint optimization problem. Software agents representing single energy units solve the scheduling problem in a completely distributed heuristic approach. Using a stepped concept, several damping mechanisms are applied to allow minimum disturbance while continuously trying to fulfill the product as contracted at the market. The development of DynaSCOPE has been embedded in a first iteration of Smart Grid Algorithm Engineering (SGAE) as a process model for the design and implementation of distributed algorithms in Smart Grid applications.},

We show how a flexibility representation based on surrogate models is extended and trained using soft constraints like avoiding frequent cold starts of combined heat and power plants. During the task of energy scheduling, the agents representing these machines include indicators in their choice for a new operation schedule. Using an example VPP we show that our approach enables the agents to reflect local soft constraints without sacrificing the global result quality.},

@article{Niee.2018, abstract = {In future energy systems dominated by distributed energy resources, additional flexibility potential will be unlocked by interlinking the infrastructures of different energy systems. Direct and indirect coupling of different energy systems like power grids, gas and heat infrastructures leads to multimodal energy systems. Combined with an ongoing pervasion of the resulting interconnected system with information and communication technology (ICT), multimodal smart grids evolve. The pervasion of the system with autonomous controllers leads on to the development of a distributed adaptive system. From an engineering perspective, it shows the desired characteristics regarding scalability and self-stabilization. Unlike these desired aspects, other effects can emerge from the distributed and adaptive nature of this system: Autonomous controllers might counteract, thus leading to instable system states. From the perspective of distributed systems research, these controller conflicts can thus be understood as unintended effects of emergence. In this short paper, we present design decision for a framework that will be developed for the evaluation of controller conflicts in multimodal smart grids. The concept of technical emergence will be applied to deterministically simulate controller conflicts generated by autonomous controllers of interlinked infrastructures.},

Whereas large generation units and large controllable loads might in general be controllable in a manual way, this is no option for small distributed generators and loads. With flexibility control in multiple owner scenarios, documentation, transparency and automation are of crucial importance. In this work, we present a fully automated congestion management approach based on a combination of distributed ledger technology and distributed algorithms in an agent-based architectural approach. We present a case study focused on the visualization of the concept and discuss the advantages and possible challenges for this approach. Whereas distributed ledger technology has been introduced for peer-to-peer energy trading within the last years, no similar approach has been presented yet for stable distribution grid management.},

To reshape energy systems towards renewable energy resources, it has to be decided today on how to accomplish the transition. Energy scenarios are widely used to guide decision making in this context. While considerable effort has been put into developing energy scenarios, researchers have pointed out three requirements for energy scenarios that are not fulfilled satisfactorily yet: The development and evaluation of energy scenarios should (1) incorporate the concept of sustainability, (2) provide decision support in a transparent way, and (3) be replicable for other researchers. To meet these requirements, we combine different methodological approaches: story-and-simulation (SAS) scenarios, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), information modeling, and co-simulation. We show how the combination of these methods can lead to an integrated approach for development and sustainability evaluation of energy scenarios assisted by automated information exchange. We concretize this approach with a sustainability evaluation process (SEP) model and an information model. We highlight, which artifacts are developed during the SEP and how the information model can help to automate the information exchange in this process. The objectives are to facilitate a sustainable development of the energy sector and to make the development and decision support processes of energy scenarios more transparent.},

But integrating these decentralized power sources into the current power grid designed for a centralized power supply is a challenging task. We suggest distributed, agent-based and self-organized control algorithms for distributed units in a ``Smart Grid'' as a promising but challenging solution. Dynamical Virtual Power Plants (DVPP) are introduced as a first prototype of distributed controlled components of a Smart Grid. Tools and methods for a comprehensive evaluation of such new Smart Grid control methods in terms of technological indicators as well as sustainability indicators will be the next challenge in research and development for computer scientists in this domain.},

Co-simulation has been identified as an efficient and flexible test approach that allows consideration of interdisciplinary dynamic interactions. However, basic coupling of simulation models alone fails to account for many of the challenges of simulation-based multi-domain testing such as expert collaboration in test planning. This paper illustrates an extended CPES test environment based on the co-simulation framework mosaik. The environment contains capabilities for simulation planning, uncertainty quantification and the development of multi-agent systems. An application case involving virtual power plant control is used to demonstrate the platform's features. Future extensibility of the highly modular test environment is outlined.},

@misc{vei20, abstract = {Modern cyber-physical systems (CPS), such as our energy infrastructure, are becoming increasingly complex: An ever-higher share of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technologies use the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facet of energy systems for operation optimization, cost efficiency, and to reach CO2 goals worldwide. At the same time, markets with increased flexibility and ever shorter trade horizons enable the multi-stakeholder situation that is emerging in this setting. These systems still form critical infrastructures that need to perform with highest reliability. However, today's CPS are becoming too complex to be analyzed in the traditional monolithic approach, where each domain, e.g., power grid and ICT as well as the energy market, are considered as separate entities while ignoring dependencies and side-effects. To achieve an overall analysis, we introduce the concept for an application of distributed artificial intelligence as a self-adaptive analysis tool that is able to analyze the dependencies between domains in CPS by attacking them. It eschews pre-configured domain knowledge, instead exploring the CPS domains for emergent risk situations and exploitable loopholes in codices, with a focus on rational market actors that exploit the system while still following the market rules.},
