Registration for courses
Registration for courses
Why is the prioritised registration procedure (so-called lottery procedure) used for special needs education courses?
In principle, there are two different procedures at the University of Oldenburg for allocating places on courses with a maximum number of participants:
- Chronological registration procedure
Course places are allocated chronologically according to the time of registration.
- Registration procedure according to priorities
Course places are allocated according to priorities and defined conditions for certain groups of students (e.g. subject semesters), if necessary using the principle of random allocation.
The Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation has decided to use the prioritised registration procedure in future in order to increase equal opportunities for students when allocating course places.
This procedure is seen as having decisive advantages :
- It is possible to set conditions for certain student groups which influence the probability of being allocated a course place.
Example: Students who make use of the so-called hardship provision or are in a higher semester have a higher probability of being allocated a place on their favoured course.
- Students have a longer period of time to register or indicate their priorities. This reduces the influence of time commitments (e.g. family, academic appointments, internships) and individual technical registration conditions (e.g. internet speed or hardware) on the allocation of course places.
Example: Students can specify and adjust their priorities for the courses of individual modules immediately after the course offerings have been made visible in Stud.IP. This is usually possible for several weeks until the course places for the module are allocated. It is therefore not necessary for all students to register at the same time at a fixed point in time.
For which degree programmes is the priority registration procedure used?
The priority registration procedure is used for seminars, exercises and colloquia for the following degree programmes:
- Two-subject Bachelor of Special Needs Education,
- Master of Education Special Needs Education,
- Master of Education Business Education for the subject Special Needs Education.
The chronological registration procedure is used for all lectures and for the Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Education degree programme.
How can I make use of the so-called hardship provision of the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation?
When allocating places on courses at the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation, students who report and demonstrate one of the so-called hardship reasons are given priority.
All information on how to apply and the hardship criteria can be found at:

I am on a waiting list! - What can I do?
After the allocation of seminar places in a module, it may happen that students are on the waiting list for a course.
In this case, please proceed as follows:
- Check which seminars in the module still have places available and make a change (withdraw from the original seminar and then register for the new seminar).
- If participation in the "free" seminars is not possible for valid reasons (e.g. time overlaps with other courses, with medical appointments or with care and nursing times), please contact Bastian Rieß([email protected]).
Step 1: Viewing the courses offered by the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation
Before the start of the semester (usually two months before), the courses offered by the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation can be viewed in Stud.IP at
course catalogue
.
You can view the modules offered on your degree programme in the course directory on Stud.IP. It is important that you select the appropriate semester in the selection field on the left-hand side.
Step 2: Selection of modules to be studied
Please select which modules you would like to take in the next semester in accordance with the examination regulations of your degree programme. The study plan for your degree programme provides guidance.
You can find the examination regulations and degree programme plan for your degree programme at:
- Two-subject Bachelor of Special Needs Education
- Master of Education Special Needs Education
- Master of Education Business Education for the subject Special Needs Education
- Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Education
Important: If your course of study deviates from the study plan, please note the participation requirements for the respective modules. The participation requirements can be found in the module descriptions.
Step 3: Register for courses and indicate priorities
Registration for lectures in the special education modules is carried out using the chronological registration procedure, as there is no restriction on the maximum number of participants for lectures.
For all other courses (seminars, tutorials, colloquia) there is a maximum number of participants. Registration for these courses takes place via the prioritised registration procedure.
Registration for lectures:
- Selection of the lecture of a module in Stud.IP.
- Select "Access to course" in the action field on the left-hand side and confirm access.
- Check your entry in the course.
Registration for all other courses (seminars, tutorials, colloquia):
- Selection of a course (seminar, exercise, colloquium) of a module that you would like to study in the future, in Stud.IP and select "Access to the course" in the action field on the left-hand side.
- Indicate, taking into account priorities, which of the courses of a module you could potentially attend in the next semester. Please always enter several courses!

It is possible to specify and adjust the priorities up to the point at which the courses of the respective module are distributed.
Important: You should always prioritise several courses (more than 3) within a module.
The percentage display on Stud.IP shows you how likely it is that you will be allocated to a particular course.

Step 4: Allocation of course places taking into account the priorities and, if necessary, adjustment of priorities
If the number of students registered for a course (seminar, tutorial, colloquium) exceeds the maximum number of participants, places are allocated at random (= lottery procedure).
When allocating course places, priority is given to students who make use of the hardship provision or who are studying in higher semesters than provided for in the study plan for this module. Students for whose semester the module is intended have a significantly higher probability of being allocated a place than students from lower semesters.
You can view the dates on which the module places are allocated on the homepage.
Important: The courses of the modules of the same semester are distributed at different times (usually 24-48 hours apart). Please take the opportunity to adjust your priorities for modules whose course places are allocated at a later date if necessary.
Step 5: Possibility to change courses, taking into account participation capacities
Once the course places have been allocated using the prioritisation procedure, you have the option of changing courses within a module if participation capacity allows. This is possible in the first four weeks after the start of the course period of the respective semester.
Important: Immediately withdraw from courses you will not be attending.
