Registering your Yubikey in the 2FA portal

Before you can use your YubiKey as a second factor for authentication, a one-time registration in the university's 2FA portal is mandatory. As soon as you have registered the second factor, you will still be able to log in to the relevant applications without any problems and will be prepared for the further security of our systems.

Always check the function of a new factor before logging out of the 2FA portal.

Even if you use a hardware security key, we still recommend installing the smartphone app so that you retain access to your data even if you lose or forget the key or the device.

Step-by-step instructions: Register YubiKey in the 2FA portal

Go to the 2FA portal of the University of Oldenburg and register by following the steps below:

Step 1: Log into the 2FA-Portal
Step 1: Log in to the 2FA portal of the University of Oldenburg
Registering Yubikey as authentication method
After logging in to the 2FA portal, the overview of your authentication methods opens.
Step 2: Select method
Step 2: Select the + option to add a new authenticator.
Step 3: YubiKey registration
Step 3: Select “YubiKey (FIDO2)” for registration
Schritt 4: Persönlichen Yubikey einrichten
Step 4: Set a descriptive name for your Yubikey and insert your Yubikey into the USB slot of your device and then click on “Recognize device”.

For the next steps, there are differences between operating systems and browsers used. Therefore, please select the desired direction.

Firefox

Step 5: Insert the YubiKey into the USB slot
Step 5: A system dialog box opens. Touch the flashing Yubikey once on the golden contact field
Step 6: Touch YubiKey
Step 6: Another system dialog box opens. Confirm that you agree to link the Yubikey to the university's 2FA system. Confirm with “Allow”.

Mac / Safari

Step 5: A system dialog box opens. Confirm the further setup of the Yubikey by clicking “Allow”.

Step 6 Please set up the physical security key here under “Further options” (security key). For Yubikey use, please do not set up a fingerprint or face scan (Apple specific)

Step 8 Now touch the Yubikey on the golden contact surface.
YubiKey successfully registered
After setting up the Yubikey, click on the “Save” button.
The registration of the YubiKey has been successfully completed. You will now see the Yubikey on the start page under your registered authentication methods
