Dr. Sonja Deppe

Sonja Deppe is the scientific coordinator of the DFG research group "Medicine, Time, and the Good Life." She is principal investigator of the Central and Integrative Project (ZIP) of this research group. After research and teaching at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, and the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), she has been a research associate in the Department of Ethics in Medicine at the University of Oldenburg since 2025. She received her doctorate in philosophy from the University of Koblenz-Landau; her dissertation, “Die Struktur von Zeit: Eine mit Bergson entworfene Metaphysik als Ausweg aus dem McTaggart’schen Dilemma” [The Structure of Time: A Metaphysics Designed with Bergson as a Way Out of McTaggart's Dilemma], was published by Schwabe Verlag. Previously, she studied philosophy and mathematics at the Humboldt University of Berlin and completed research stays at the Université Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux III, the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, and the University of Pisa.

Sonja Deppe's research focuses on temporal structures – in the area of experience, in metaphysics, in relation to psychodiversity, and with regard to the question of a good life. Her working method is characterized by the conscious linking of discourses from different academic traditions and schools of thought, for example, through the confrontation of analytical and continental philosophical questions or through the close exchange between empirical-hermeneutic and philosophical-ethical research approaches. In the DFG-FOR 5022 subproject ZIP entitled “Die Relevanz biographischer und generativer (Dis-)Kontinuität für ein gutes Leben“ [The Relevance of Biographical and Generative (Dis)Continuity for a Good Life], she investigates the conditions under which temporal structures are experienced as conducive to a good life and how this depends, in particular, on how the relationship between persistent structures on the one hand and disruptions on the other can be shaped.
