PROMOS Scholarship for studying abroad
Students and, if applicable, doctoral candidates at the University of Oldenburg who wish to spend a semester outside of Europe, write their thesis at a foreign (partner) university or institution, or take part in a language or specialist course can apply here.
The application period for PROMOS scholarships opens twice a year:
- Scholarship applications for stays abroad starting between 1 January and 30 June need to be submitted by 30 September of the year before.
- Applications for stays abroad starting between 1 July and 31 December need to be submitted by 31 March of the same year.
Application requirements: Funding lines
In principle, the following activities abroad can be funded:
- Study visits
Only students on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes are eligible for funding. The duration of the study visit must be at least one and at most six months. Scholarship holders receive a fixed partial scholarship instalment for a maximum of two months as well as a one-off country-specific travel allowance (recipients of international BAföG do not receive the travel allowance).
- Thesis work/final projects abroad
Students on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes who are writing their thesis at a university or company abroad are eligible for funding. Scholarship holders receive a one-off country-specific travel allowance.
- Language courses
Students on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes and doctoral candidates are eligible for funding. The language course must last at least three weeks and at most six months. Courses with at least 25 weekly teaching hours (à 45 minutes) at universities or recognised language institutes are eligible for funding. Scholarship holders receive a one-off course fee allowance of 500 euros.
- Specialist courses
Students on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes and doctoral candidates are eligible for funding. The specialist course must last at least one and no more than six weeks. Specialist courses include, for example, summer or winter schools, workshops at universities, and similar events. Travel in connection with conferences and lectures cannot be funded. Scholarship holders receive a one-off course fee allowance of 500 euros.

Application: two steps
Step 1: Online application form
Complete the online application form and send it off.
Step 2: Upload your application documents to the university’s Cloud Storage
Upload your application documents to cloudstorage.uni-oldenburg.de
You must submit the following documents:
- pdf-application form for studying abroad (fully completed and signed)
- Curriculum vitae (in tabular form; may be in German or English)
- Letter of motivation (max. 2 pages; may be in German or English)
- Current academic record stating your average grade (as a Stud.IP printout)
- Previous academic record (only if there are less than 3 results in the current record)
- Current certificate of enrolment
- Proof of voluntary work (brief official confirmation of duration and scope suffices; self-documentation of volunteering cannot be accepted)
Only for self-organised stays abroad (i.e., stays not organised via the International Office of the University of Oldenburg) must you also submit the following documents:
- Notification of acceptance by the host university or institution
- Language certificate (for the teaching language; not required for participation in language courses)

„Ein Auslandssemester in Australien? Klingt erst mal nach einem teuren, bürokratischen Albtraum – dachte ich auch! Doch nach den Infoveranstaltungen des International Office der Uni Oldenburg wurde schnell klar: Es gibt zahlreiche Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten, darunter Direktaustauschplätze, Auslands-BAföG oder das PROMOS-Stipendium. Plötzlich wurde der Traum realistisch! Das Auslands-BAföG und PROMOS-Stipendium waren für mich eine wertvolle finanzielle Unterstützung. Letzteres wird von vielen deutschen Unis vergeben und dient der Förderung von unter anderem Semesteraufenthalten. Die Bewerbung verlief unkompliziert über das International Office der Uni Oldenburg und das Stipendium half mir einen Teil meiner Kosten zu decken. Dadurch hatte ich mehr Spielraum, um mein Auslandssemester zu genießen. Wer sich für ein Studium im Ausland interessiert, sollte sich frühzeitig über diese Fördermöglichkeiten informieren.“

„Während ich mich für den Auslandsaufenthalt beworben habe, bin ich auf die Ausschreibung des Promos-Stipendiums gestoßen und da die Kosten für drei Monate Sprachkurs nicht allzu gering waren, habe ich mich direkt daran gemacht alle erforderlichen Dokumente für die Bewerbung des Stipendiums zu sammeln. Die geforderten Dokumente habe ich Anfang April eingereicht und musste daraufhin zunächst bis Ende Juni warten, wo ich dann zunächst die Nachricht bekommen habe, dass mein Antrag leider nicht genehmigt werden konnte. Jedoch erhielt ich zwei Wochen später die Nachricht, dass ich glücklicherweise als Nachrückerin ein Teilstipendium in Höhe von 500€ erhalten würde.
Als ich diese Nachricht erhielt, war ich bereits seit einem Monat in Toronto und habe gelernt, dass die Lebenshaltungskosten vor Ort recht hoch sind, wodurch mir die Zusage des Stipendiums meinen Aufenthalt in Toronto noch schöner gemacht hat.
Da der Aufwand sich für das Promos-Stipendium zu bewerben wirklich nicht allzu groß ist und das Stipendium eine wirklich gute Unterstützung darstellen kann, kann ich nur empfehlen, es mit einer Bewerbung zu versuchen!“
Norway - Nord University (Fachkurs, 2025): Klostermann & Linnemann (in German)
„Leider gibt es für Summer Schools/ Fachkurse nicht viele Stipendien, jedoch haben wir uns auf PROMOS beworben. Für die Bewerbung muss man ein Motivationsschreiben, Notenbescheinigung, Sprachtest, Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, CV, ggf. Ehrenamtsnachweis und die Bestätigung der Teilnahme an der Summer School einreichen. Besonders das Motivationsschreiben entscheidet über die Vergabe der Stipendien.
Wir hatten Glück und durften uns beide über 500 € Fördermittel freuen. Da Bodø recht weit nördlich in Norwegen liegt und auch mit ca. 50.000 Einwohnern relativ klein ist, waren die Flugangebote limitiert und sehr teuer. Wir sind mit Widerøe geflogen und haben deshalb auch fast 470€ für Hin- und Rückflug bezahlt. Da kam uns das PROMOS Stipendium sehr entgegen und wir konnten so mit größerer Vorfreude nach Norwegen aufbrechen.“

„Vor allem die finanzielle Planung spielt bei einem Auslandssemester eine entscheidende Rolle, und es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, Unterstützung zu erhalten. (…) Zusätzlich habe ich ein Reisestipendium von der Fulbright Germany und ein PROMOS-Stipendium erhalten, die mir geholfen haben, die doch recht hohen Kosten des Semesters zu stemmen. Mein Tipp: Bewerbt euch einfach auf alle möglichen Stipendien! Selbst wenn die Erfolgsaussichten unklar erscheinen, ist es oft den Aufwand wert.“
