In order to provide the necessary background knowledge on the plastic problem and possible solutions, the collection of tasks and experiments is available to users of the "Müllkoffer". This is divided into five large modules:

  1. What is plastic? - An introduction to the chemical properties of plastics and our use of plastic in everyday life
  2. How does plastic get into the sea? - Tracking plastics in our waste recycling system and possible sources and pathways into the oceans
  3. What happens to plastic in the sea? - The formation of microplastics and the general consequences of plastic pollution for marine life
  4. What do we do about plastic in the sea? - Developing and weighing up different solution strategies
  5. Plastic in the environment: What? How? Why? - A general overview of the background and consequences of plastic waste and possible solution strategies

Modules 1-4 can be worked on consecutively or individually and independently of each other. The same applies to all task sheets and the experiments. Module 5 covers the core aspects of modules 1-4 and thus provides a basic overview of the topic. Depending on the design, the material is suitable for grades 4-10.

The content

Most of the materials required for the experiments are already included in the "Müllkoffer". All additional resources are labelled accordingly. In addition to the solutions and explanations for the worksheets, the supplementary material contains further suggestions for activities (excursions, games and a film) in the classroom as well as information from other projects and organisations that revolve around the topic of plastics.

The case has been designed to be as self-explanatory as possible. All worksheets, instructions and solutions as well as the additional material are available in digital and pre-printed form. The materials and consumables for the experiments have been put together in a plug-in system so that everything fits into the trolley case in a compact and transportable way.
