History of the AG Geoecology

The Geoecology working group has been in existence since January 2008. This newly established working group emerged from the ICBM Marine Station, which was responsible for the "research and teaching" service at the TERRAMARE e.V. research centre until 31.12.2007 in addition to its own scientific activities. Due to the merger of the Terramare research centre with the University of Oldenburg on 1 January 2008, the "research and teaching" service area was discontinued and the ICBM marine station was dissolved.

Stages of the ICBM Marine Station

1979The first field station was set up in Wilhelmshaven for work on the mudflats and at sea. Since then, shallow sea and coastal research at the University of Oldenburg has expanded considerably. The need for working space on the coast has grown accordingly.
1987the branch office moved to a larger rented building on the south beach and set up laboratories and workplaces there. The former branch office became the marine station.
1989the next expansion followed with the acquisition of a detached house on Schleuseninsel. Laboratories and workstations were also set up here. This building is still available and, after extensive renovation, was converted into an office building and occupied by the "Integrative Modelling" working group in September 2008.
1994the marine station was extended again with the completion of the new TERRAMARE building on Schleuseninsel. At the same time, in co-operation with the TERRAMARE e.V. research centre, the number of users increased: whereas previously the limited accommodation was only sufficient for the on-site support of Oldenburg field research, the station in the new building also took over the support of workplaces for TERRAMARE research and for domestic and foreign guest researchers and courses.
2008On 1 January, the Zentrum für Flachmeer-, Küsten- und Meeresumweltforschung e.V. - Forschungszentrum Terramare - merged with the University of Oldenburg and is now the Wilhelmshaven site of the Institute of Biology and Chemistry of the Marine Environment (ICBM) under the name ICBM - Terramare. Wilhelmshaven thus became a university location. In connection with the merger, the areas of responsibility were reorganised, as a result of which the ICBM marine station was dissolved and the previous head was entrusted with the management of the newly established "Geoecology" working group.
