Giglio excursion
The island of Giglio
The island of Giglio is located in the Mediterranean Sea, approx. 18 km from the harbour "Porto Santo Stefano", which lies on the western Italian coast, and thus in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. The island is 8.3 km long and has a total area of 21.2 km2. This makes it the second largest island in the Tuscan archipelago.
There are 1500 inhabitants on the island, most of whom live in the towns of Porto, Castello and Campese, the rest of the island is uninhabited and the flora and fauna can spread out here. Most of the island is made up of granite, but in the north-west it is made up of limestone and quartzite. The highest mountain reaches 496 metres above sea level.
Giglio is surrounded by crystal-clear water, which attracts many divers. But the beautiful landscape is also popular with botanists, hikers and tourists. Hiking trails lead through the dominant maquis, garrigue and holm oak forests and you can admire many different plants, mainly hardwoods, but also flowering plants in the ruderal areas. Of course, there is also something for zoologists: there are Mediterranean scorpions, wall lizards and many feathered friends to discover.
