Award ceromony 2025

Award ceremony of the UGO-Open-Science-Award 2025 as part of the Science Slam

On 18 June 2025, as part of the Science Slam of the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, the UGO-Open-Science-Award 2025 was awarded to the Klimaoasen Oldenburg team. Their project stood out from a strong and diverse field of applicants thanks to its practical research and exceptionally committed citizen participation.

The Klimaoasen Oldenburg project is an example of how urban recreation can be combined with ecological responsibility. As a co-operation project between the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch, the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences and the Stadt Oldenburg, it is funded under the federal programme "Adapting urban spaces to climate change". The focus is on the climate-resilient design of urban greenery and communicating its importance for quality of life and environmental awareness. The jury is convinced that this goal is being pursued in an exemplary manner through close cooperation between science, the city and society. The project is thus entirely in the spirit of open and transparent research.

Prof Dr Dirk Albach (School V), who submitted the application as deputy, and Saskia Benthack (Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch) impressively presented the project and its open science approach to the Science Slam audience in a short presentation.

The other winners:

2nd place:

Dr rer. nat. Giso Grimm (School VI): Outstanding Open Science commitment and the open source tools "TASCAR" and "OVBOX"

3rd place:

Dr Alejandra Vovides with Team CoVe Lab (School V): "mini buoys " project - Using citizen science to monitor coastal ecosystems

Sumbul Jafri with Team OHHR (School VI): Project "Oldenburg Hearing Health Record" - For an open handling of data in hearing research

Since 2023, the Universitätsgesellschaft (UGO) e.V. has been honouring projects and initiatives that are guided by the principles of Open Science and actively work to make research results transparent and publicly accessible. We would like to thank the UGO e.V. for awarding the UGO-Open-Science-Award, the organisation team of the Science Slam for the stage, all applicants for their inspiring contributions and congratulate all Slammys!
