Cooperation Oldenburg-Groningen
Cooperation Oldenburg-Groningen
The University of Oldenburg (UOL) and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) Groningen have been working closely together for over 40 years - a cooperation agreement was signed back in 1980. The co-operation was further intensified with the founding of University Medicine Oldenburg (UMO): A cross-border medical degree programme was installed as a part of the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen (EMS).
This project is unique in Europe and sets new standards in medical training. In addition, Groningen and Oldenburg scientists also work closely together in research and create synergies in pioneering research fields. Last but not least, the two locations also cooperate in the provision of care, so that patients in the north-west region benefit considerably from the German-Dutch cooperation.
Study
The Human Medicine degree programme aims to promote European cooperation in medical education through co-operation with Groningen. Oldenburg students can spend part of their degree programme in Groningen. There are various options for this so that students can utilise flexibility in planning their Groningen exchange. For example, they can do their research work there in their fourth or fifth year of study or complete parts of their block internships or practical year in Groningen.
Research
Since the 1980s, UOL and RUG have jointly realised numerous scientific projects. With the founding of University Medicine Oldenburg in 2012, cross-border research activities in the field of medicine and health sciences were bundled even more closely. One example is the binational doctoral programme "Translational Research: From Pathological Mechanisms to Therapy", which was launched in 2017/2018.
