1,800 first-year students begin their studies at the university

1,800 first-year students are beginning their studies at our university this winter semester. Orientation Week began on Monday with an opening ceremony in the lecture hall centre.

"The University of Oldenburg is open to new approaches; this has always been our guiding principle. Now you too are breaking new ground. We are delighted that you will be enriching us with your perspectives, experiences and talents. You contribute to the diversity of our university – bring it to bear, day after day." With these words, University President Prof. Dr Ralph Bruder welcomed nearly 1,800 first-year students to the Audimax lecture hall on the Haarentor campus today.

The event, which marks the official start of orientation week at the university, focused on welcoming the new students. In addition to the president, Prof. Dr Andrea Strübind, Vice President for Studying and Teaching, Sebastian Wilks, Head of the Academic Examinations Office, and members of the Student Council (AStA) also welcomed the first-year students on stage. Mayor Jürgen Krogmann addressed the guests with a video message. As every year, the event took place twice in order to welcome all new students to the university.

The welcome event gave new students an overview of the diverse campus life. It was moderated by Charles Good, who is studying History and English at the university to become a teacher. The first-year students received many tips – via video clips from older students, but also from Croatian student Sonja Bozic, who reported on her own study and life experiences in Oldenburg. The performances by the jazz and modern dance courses showcased one of the many activities offered by the University Sports Centre. A student band led by Stephan Schomaker provided musical accompaniment for the event.

Following the programme on stage, the freshmen had the opportunity to visit the ‘info market’ in the foyer of the lecture hall centre to find out more about their studies and the cultural and sporting activities available on campus and in the surrounding area of Oldenburg. The 14,800 students currently enrolled will begin their regular classes for the 2025/26 winter semester on 13 October.
