We are pleased to announce the publication of our new paper "Ten Recommendations for Engineering Research Software in Energy Research" as part of the ACM E-Energy. In this work, Stephan Ferenz, Emilie Frost, Rico Schrage, Thomas Wolgast, and Astrid Nieße from our group developed together with Inga Beyers (Leibniz Universität Hannover), Oliver Karras (TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology) and Oliver Werth (OFFIS - Institut für Informatik) the recommendations to better engineer and develop energy research software.
Energy research software is a crucial component of energy research, enabling researchers to visualize, simulate, and analyze complex energy systems. However, the development of energy research software is often hindered by a lack of formal training in software engineering among researchers. This can lead to reduced reproducibility and reusability of energy research software, ultimately limiting the advancement of energy research.
To address these issues, we developed ten central recommendations for the development of energy research software, covering areas such as conceptualization, development, testing, and publication of energy research software. These recommendations are based on the outcomes of two workshops with a diverse group of energy researchers and aim to improve the awareness of research software engineering in the energy domain.
The paper provides a valuable resource for energy researchers, especially early career researchers, highlighting the importance of high-quality energy research software for advancing energy research. We hope this work contributes to improving energy research software development and supporting the reproducibility of energy research.
