The August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann-Foundation provides financial support for a period of 12 to 18 months to outstanding students in the field of chemistry throughout Germany. This year two chemistry students from our university were arwarded this scholarship. Sabine Boekhoff and Lilly Koch impressed the Foundation with their outstanding scolars, personal commitment in and for society and their passion for the subject of chemistry:
Sabine Boekhoff completed an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant with excellent grades. After several years of professional experience, she decided to study chemistry and biology with the aim of becoming a teacher. Inspired by a teacher from her former school days and guided by her experience in supervising apprentices, she would like to pass on her enthusiasm for science to pupils.
Lilly Koch, who is also studying the subjects chemistry and biology, was awarded the „GDCh-Abiturpreis” (awarded by the GErman Chemical Society to pupils) for her achievements in the subject of chemistry. She has been involved in children's and youth work for many years and would like to pass on her fascination for chemistry to young people in the future as she sees chemistry as a way of understanding and actively shaping the world.
Prof Thorsten Klüner is Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry and a mentor in the mentoring programme of the Institute of Chemistry, a programme in which students are individually supervised, supported and advised in small groups by professors, especially at the beginning of their studies. He was the mentor of Sabine Boekhoff and Lilly Koch and he saw them as interested students who showed an intrinsic curiosity and fascination for natural sciences and the subject of chemistry in particular, and encouraged them to apply for the August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann-Foundation scholarship.
