Researchers give talks in Oldenburg bars – insights into 16 current projects
Oldenburg. One evening, eight bars, 16 talks: in a relaxed atmosphere, Oldenburg researchers will give entertaining and informative talks about their current projects as part of the “Hirn vom Hahn – Wissen frisch gezapft!” (Brain on tap – knowledge freshly tapped!) series on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
There will be two lectures in each pub, the first starting at 7:30 p.m. and the second at 8:45 p.m. For 20 minutes, the researchers will talk about current scientific issues in their field, curiosities from their everyday work, and fascinating research results. Afterwards, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in deeper conversation.
The range of topics is as diverse as the backgrounds of the participating scientists. For example, they will discuss why it is so difficult to communicate the global extinction of species, how women's health could be better addressed, and what opportunities and limitations upcycling offers in terms of sustainability. The range of disciplines spans from social psychology, ecology, and cultural studies to computer science, physics, and medicine.
The participating pubs and bars are: Artischocke Weinbar, Buddel Jungs Bar, Garda Gourmet Weinbar, das Marvin's, Karin's Kneipe, die Ule, The Pub, and UmBAUbar. Between the two lectures, interested participants will have enough time to move to another of the partaking pubs and bars. Admission is free and registration is not required. It is advisable to arrive early.
“Hirn vom Hahn” is a series of events organized by the Oldenburg Network for Science Communication (OLWIK). OLWIK is an association of scientific and research institutions in Oldenburg. Its mission is to make scientific work (even) more accessible to the public. To this end, OLWIK organizes events and also produces the podcast “Hirn gehört: Oldenburger Wissensschnack” (Brain hears: Oldenburg knowledge chat) with researchers from Oldenburg and the surrounding region.
The event is sponsored by the Economic Development Agency of the City of Oldenburg, the Gertrud and Hellmut Barthel Foundation, and the OLB Foundation.
